Growing Sweet Potatoes

This was my first year growing sweet potatoes - Georgia Jet sweet potatoes.  I love the leap of faith that gardening involves - plopping plants or seeds in the ground and just trusting that they will magically turn into food.  Someday.  Somehow.  I've yet to be disappointed and even if we hadn't ended up with sweet potatoes just seeing the abundance of glossy green vine and these gorgeous blooms would have made growing sweet potatoes worth the while for me.  But...
we did end up with sweet potatoes.
Lots and lots of sweet potatoes.
Now I just need to find some more sweet potato recipes...and I do think it is well past time that I try  sweet potato pie.

I never tried sweet potatoes because I though my area was to far north for good growing conditions, not a long enough season. But if you can grow them up where you are, I am putting them on the list for next year. Thanks for the idea.

What a beautiful harvest! I love sweet potatoes in stews, soups, cut for home fries, or just plain oven roasted :) Enjoy!
Happy Thanksgiving weekend!

Our season's heat spells are pretty unpredictable and we did try sweet potatoes or yams last year. (I've forgotten which...) Ours didn't yield alot, and they didn't taste as well as I'd hoped. But like you, I was impressd with the fact that they grew beauitful vines with a similar shaped flower, and as hard as we tried, the season doesn't allow us the warmth that you have there.

They really looked like they produced an awesome crop for you! Do they keep well??

Sweet potatoe pie sounds heavenly, I had it once when a man we gardened with who was from the Caribbean, brought some to share that his brother had made at Thanksgiving. It was spicy and so good!

Hi Erin

It doesn't sound like they do store well, which surprised me. I have them in my coldroom but I'll make an effort to use them up in a month or so. I found a recipe for rustic vegetable torte which was delicious so maybe I'll have to make that a few more times along with the sweet potato pie. ;-) Plus, I still have more in the ground that I haven't dug up yet so I'll leave them there as long as I can.
