Apple Season

I feel so incredibly blessed to live in an area that is just full of locally grown fruits and vegetables.  Right now, whenever we go out, we drive past fields of pumpkins, squash, peppers and tomatoes as well as orchards filled with apples, pears and still some plums.  There are vineyards full of fresh grapes to be had and still lots of vegetables too.  It won't be long before there is frost everywhere so it is a good time to stock up.

Yesterday I was invited to go pick apples with a friend and it would appear that my total lack of self control also applies to apples.  Not a big surprise.  We filled box after box with gorgeous apples - most of them windfalls and still in perfect shape.

So...we will be feasting on fresh apples, fresh juice, baked apples (and E is desperate to roast some over the fire), apple turnovers, apple pie, apple pancakes and especially apple sauce (perhaps over gingerbread cake, definitely on our 7 grain cooked cereal in the mornings and also in our Fruit and Nut bars).  And now we get to look forward to fun with  friends when we get together to make sauce and juice and dried apple slices to put by for winter.  Yum!!
