Starting to Feel at "Home"

Little by little it is starting to feel like home around here.

Flowers on the table
Nettle drying

Fruit in season for dessert dogs being silly
Bird, bug and plant books on the table alongside tea and binoculars...

and most importantly...
clothes on the line.
It just doesn't feel like home to me until I can put clothes on the line. (Thanks so much for the proper clothes line, Mary-Sue)

So many things have been going on in my life lately that have had me really considering what "home" means to me and to my family. It has really sunk in for us (even though we thought we already knew!) that home is really key in our lives. I knew it for the boys and I...knew how vitally important a part home plays in our lives but everything that has been going on lately has caused my husband to also consider the role of "home" in his life. He really gets more than ever that home is his anchor - the place where he gets his strength and comfort and peace from.
I used to not really like the term "homemaker", mostly because I felt it was applied in a rather limiting way (as I think most labels tend to do) and it wasn't a label I would have thought to apply to myself (I don't like any labels, really). But, now when I look at the word homemaker...Home Maker - the maker of a home -I wonder if that term needs to be thought of in a whole new light. Could there be a more important job -to us, our families, our communities, our world - than to be the maker of a home? The home we make for our families - for ourselves - will be what fills our days, as well as our memories and our children's memories, for years to come. It is, for me, where I feel my most settled, my most comfortable, my most at peace and I know this to be true for my family as well. I wonder if we all realize the importance of being the makers of a home?

Is that rose sugar or borax and roses?

Lovely photos, Heather. Looks like a super place to spend a year.

It is epsom salt and wild rose buds, Shelia. I'm making some rose scented bath salts. No garden full of lavender this year so the wild roses fill in nicely instead. ;-)

oh Heather, you said it! 'home' is where it's at!! and you are such a gifted home-maker. and no, i don't think any of us really truly realize the importance of being makers of the home... thanks for the gentle reminder!

Wonderful thoughts on being a home maker. I've always been satisfied with that as a label (it's "housewife" that doesn't appeal to me.) It's the environment and atmosphere of a place that truly make it a home. The ability to make it so, is a special gift given to women, which in turn influences every member of the family. Being a home maker is a very powerful position to be in. It is so sad that more women don't understand this.
